Part Two: Subnational Regions with HDI over 0.8

Part two!

The previous map showed HDI’s over 0.9, which is an extremely high threshold. So I thought I would make another map of subnational divisions
over 0.8. What makes a country rich or poor? We could draw the line at 0.8 HDI, categorized as “very high” development by the UN. Drawing a
line like this is a bit problematic, not to mention that HDI far from measures all qualities which add to a fulfilling existence. However, the reason I
made these maps was to show that poverty and affluence does not just follow national borders, and this is something HDI showcases nicely.

Suggestions on improving the map are welcome, and please point out any mistakes I might have made!

-The term Subnational Divisions refers to the regions used by the UN, not administrative regions as defined by any country.

-Taiwan is colored entirely because it is considered a province of the PRC by the UN, the HDI rating is however provided by the Taiwanese
government “using the same methods as the UN in 2017”.

-Microstates are counted as one.

-The caribbean island nations are counted as one because information for them was not provided by UN websites, Barbados is the exception.

-The UN does not provide HDI information for each Israeli province, Israeli controlled territory is however at an average of .903, while Palestine
sits at .686.

Subnational Regions w/ HDI over 0.9

HDI is usually presented on a national level. However, the HDI can vary a lot within a country. For example, the state in the United States with the highest HDI is Massachusetts at .959, while the lowest is Mississippi, at .867.

The blue regions all have an HDI over .9, making them comparable with that of Norway, where the lowest HDI of any subnational division is Sør-Østlandet at .917.

-Moscow is counted separately because the UN subdivisions of Russia are gigantic, this is purely a creative decision.

-The UN does not provide HDI information for each Israeli province, Israeli controlled territory is however at an average of .903, while Palestine sits at .686.

The DNA of My Brazilian Friend

When I don't make maps I analyse DNA. That is at least one of my hobbies. I do this by analysing raw DNA data from third parties (usually MyHeritage) with DNA analysing algorithms supplied by the free service Genesis GED Match. My Brazilian friend told me about how his DNA results from MyHeritage were disappointing, assigning him Eastern European DNA when he knew for a fact his family history to be Native American. MyHeritage and other popular DNA testing companies often do not take into account non-european heritage into their estimates, or they do not do it very well, by using many algorithms you can get a much better estimate of someone's heritage. While these tests are never completely accurate since people are not bound to any geographical place, I believe this estimate based on at least 10 algorithms to be pretty good.

My First Map

I have for a long time been interested in mapmaking, but the maps I made never exceeded plotting random colours into countries and playing around. A few days ago I got the idea to show all the languages with the same amount of native speakers as my own mother tongue, Norwegian. This sparked learning how to use QGIS and when I was done making the map I felt like it deserved to be displayed rather than be forgotten in some folder on my computer. So, here is my first map.
