Major African Languages

This is the first draft of this project which has taken me two months to complete. I will write more about this map eventually.

Gay Rights Across the World

Are you gay? Are you planning on leaving your country? Are you concerned about the gay rights in said country? Look no further because I have the map for you!

Gay rights in the world are constantly changing, moving towards more and more recognition, and I plan on keeping this map updated as we see (hopefully) more and more blue pop up.

What are Continents?

Continent - mid 16th cent. (denoting a continuous tract of land): from Latin terra continens ‘continuous land.’

According to this definition there are four continents. America, Afroeurasia, Australia and Antarctica
(maybe throw Greenland in there for good measure). In usage, however, the word continent does not keep
true to its definition. In the English speaking world there are seven continents, North America, South
America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania and Antarctica. In Russia Europe and Asia are usually considered
one continent; Eurasia.

These divisions are strange, Europe is certainly connected to Asia, and so is Africa if you look closely at
Egypt. There does not seem to be anything separating North and South America either. And what is up
with the Islands? Does Greenland belong to America or Europe? And where does polynesia go? The
worst about the seven continent world view in my opinion is that it gives Europe Special status as a
continent, and disregards the middle east and India. The latter is even taunted with the title subcontinent!
What makes India subpar compared to Europe?

The Major Languages of Tanzania

Tanzania is a fascinating country, famous for Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti and the waters around Zanzibar. Tanzania is also the heart of the Swahili language and Swahili media such as Swahiliwood. There are however many other languages in the country, and I wanted to find out more about the most widely spoken ones.

If you believe I got any of the borders wrong, or if there are more languages that should be included (for example for number of speakers, or mutual intelligibility etc.) please tell me! Or any other mistakes, comments etc.

HD map: https://i.redd.it/xy519sy09r831.jpg

Footnotes:
-I only included languages with a native speakerbase over one million.
-There must be at least one million of the speakers in Tanzania, that means that the Luo and Maasai are for example not included because their speakers mostly reside in Kenya.
-I did not write the exact number nor estimates of the speakerbase for each language since the estimates vary wildly depending on source. Even the population of Tanzania is not certain since the last national census was conducted in 2012, and the estimates are known to miss by a few millions. Censuses regarding languages are sparse and far in between. A lot of guesswork going on here.
-I found sources saying Hehe and Bena are mutually intelligible, others saying they are not. I found sources saying Hangaza and Ha are mutually intelligible with Kinyarwanda/Kirundi, others saying they are not. My decisions in both cases might be wrong, and I would be happy to be corrected.

-I colored in Burundi and Rwanda to show their relation to Ha and Hangaza.

The Global Middle Class

Do borders divide people or does class? It seems to me that people all around the world belonging to the middle class share a common culture, and that the cultural division we think of between nations is at least just as strong between poor and rich as with any middle class Afghani and middle class Chilean. This idea, whether wrong or not, is what sparked the creation of this map.

The Global Wealth Report defines middle class as anyone belonging to a family unit which makes (PPP and inflation adjusted) 100 US dollars a day. Where the line between lower and middle class is drawn is admittedly completely arbitrary, some draw it much lower and some draw it a bit higher.

If you see any mistakes please comment what they are and I will see if I can fix it. I would also very much like to make a map with more countries, and if you know of any better datasets regarding national household incomes I could work with I would be happy to hear about them!

Footnotes:
-This map is limited as it only includes the 47 countries in the Global Wealth Report, which is linked to below.
-The size of the countries is just visual representation and does not have an exact size correlation to size of middle classes.
-This map shows both the middle class and the upper class as one, only excluding the lower class. The reasoning behind this is that the very upper class (1%) is so small that it is almost non-existent in actual numbers.
-The values are millions - percentage of population.

Languages That Are "Secretly" Different Languages

"A language is a dialect with and army and a navy." -Unknown

HD map with Thai: https://imgur.com/xCAE6pV
HD original map: https://imgur.com/GtEucoD

Footnotes and remarks:

-I made a correction and added Thai

-I divided Arabic this way based on native speakers understanding of their language. It seems that generally speakers from the Maghreb understand each other, and Mashriqi understand each other, while Egyptian is understood by everyone, being the bridge of Arabic. Sudanese is apparently its own thing.

-I am worried that some of the Italian dialects might be more than the map suggests. Perhaps some should merge?

-Only languages big enough to occupy the majority of at least one national subdivision show. Huizhou for example does not because it is a minority language in all areas where it is spoken.

Languages that are "Secretly" The Same Language

"A language is a dialect with and army and a navy." -Unknown

The borders are approximates based on national divisions. Mapping language is impossible to do perfectly, but I hope I have done a good job. If you see any subdivisions you believe have a different linguistic composition than reflected on the map, or any inconsistencies, please let me know.

I am also curious to see any opinions on these secret languages. If you do not agree with the map please tell me why and how. This map is based on asking native speakers how they feel about the situation.

Update: Fixed the mistake of naming Montenegrin Macedonian.

Part Two: Subnational Regions with HDI over 0.8

Part two!

The previous map showed HDI’s over 0.9, which is an extremely high threshold. So I thought I would make another map of subnational divisions
over 0.8. What makes a country rich or poor? We could draw the line at 0.8 HDI, categorized as “very high” development by the UN. Drawing a
line like this is a bit problematic, not to mention that HDI far from measures all qualities which add to a fulfilling existence. However, the reason I
made these maps was to show that poverty and affluence does not just follow national borders, and this is something HDI showcases nicely.

Suggestions on improving the map are welcome, and please point out any mistakes I might have made!

Footnotes:
-The term Subnational Divisions refers to the regions used by the UN, not administrative regions as defined by any country.
-Taiwan is colored entirely because it is considered a province of the PRC by the UN, the HDI rating is however provided by the Taiwanese
government “using the same methods as the UN in 2017”.
-Microstates are counted as one.
-The caribbean island nations are counted as one because information for them was not provided by UN websites, Barbados is the exception.
-The UN does not provide HDI information for each Israeli province, Israeli controlled territory is however at an average of .903, while Palestine
sits at .686.

Provinces of Iran with HDI Over 0.8

Iran is at the crossroads between rich and poor... In my opinion. How you define rich and poor varies widely, not to mention the issues with the HDI. Nevertheless, I think this paints an informative picture for the Iranian situation. This map was created together with the global version.

Subnational Regions w/ HDI over 0.9

HDI is usually presented on a national level. However, the HDI can vary a lot within a country. For example, the state in the United States with the highest HDI is Massachusetts at .959, while the lowest is Mississippi, at .867.

The blue regions all have an HDI over .9, making them comparable with that of Norway, where the lowest HDI of any subnational division is Sør-Østlandet at .917.

Footnotes:
-The term Subnational Divisions refers to the regions used by the UN, not administrative regions as defined by any country.
-Taiwan is colored entirely because it is considered a province of the PRC by the UN, the HDI rating is however provided by the Taiwanese government “using the same methods as the UN in 2017”.
-Microstates are counted as one.
-Moscow is counted separately because the UN subdivisions of Russia are gigantic, this is purely a creative decision.
-The UN does not provide HDI information for each Israeli province, Israeli controlled territory is however at an average of .903, while Palestine sits at .686.

The First, Second, and Third Largest Immigrant Groups in Norway by Fylke (Province)

Norway is pretty diverse. Here is a map collection of Norway's biggest immigrant groups by province (fylke).

Sources:
My sources are primarily SSB 2018 (the Norwegian bureau of statistics), with the exception of Svalbard which has data from 2016. Data for Svalbard only includes Norwegian settlements. Poland and Russia both have territories on the islands, and if they were to be included the largest minorities would be Russian, thereafter Polish.

For clarification, these are maps showing the total amount of people with an immigrant background who have stayed in Norway over a long period of time.

The DNA of My Brazilian Friend

When I don't make maps I analyse DNA. That is at least one of my hobbies. I do this by analysing raw DNA data from third parties (usually MyHeritage) with DNA analysing algorithms supplied by the free service Genesis GED Match. My Brazilian friend told me about how his DNA results from MyHeritage were disappointing, assigning him Eastern European DNA when he knew for a fact his family history to be Native American. MyHeritage and other popular DNA testing companies often do not take into account non-european heritage into their estimates, or they do not do it very well, by using many algorithms you can get a much better estimate of someone's heritage. While these tests are never completely accurate since people are not bound to any geographical place, I believe this estimate based on at least 10 algorithms to be pretty good.

A Silly Map of How I See the Americas

The Americas is a continent filled with stereotypes. Here are those that come to mind when I think of the not so old world.

A Silly Map of How I See Africa

What do you see when you look at the world map? How do you remember the countries if you close your eyes and try to remember them? Your own country and its neighbours are most likely very clear in your inner world, other places too, like Japan, the UK, the US, Western Europe. If you like geography perhaps you know the location of the Ural mountains, maybe you can point to Singapore or Lake Victoria. What the fewest of us can do is picture an accurate map of Africa, perhaps unless you are actually from Africa.

When I close my eyes this is what I see, with some humorous tweaks.

A Size Comparison of Unusually Slender Territories

Is it not strange how similar Norway and Kamchatka look? And Japan and Somalia? Surprised me too.

PS: The reason Somalia does not include Somaliland is because Somaliland is de facto an independent state.

African Countries with Majority L1 Languages

I have been wondering for a while what language one would have to learn to thrive in Africa. The answer is often English or French, yet looking up any African country often reveals tens or hundreds of languages being spoken, often none claiming a majority. To understand the situation better I made this map showing countries in Subsaharan Africa where there is a majority L1 spoken language, and which they are. I think I will make another map sooner or later about Lingua Francas in Africa.

This map I made waaaay faster, but it was still a pain in the ass. I am not sure if I liked the outcome... A lot of lines, it looks very busy. I did learn a lot from making it though! Comoros and Mauritius seem like awesome countries. Mauritius is an Africa Island nation consisting of Indians with afros who speak French.

My First Map

I have for a long time been interested in mapmaking, but the maps I made never exceeded plotting random colours into countries and playing around. A few days ago I got the idea to show all the languages with the same amount of native speakers as my own mother tongue, Norwegian. This sparked learning how to use QGIS and when I was done making the map I felt like it deserved to be displayed rather than be forgotten in some folder on my computer. So, here is my first map.

Edit June 2019: This map won the reddit mapcontext of May 2019! Very cool and makes me very happy. Here is a link to the competition and the runner ups:
